New bridge in Mumbai - Atal Setu Bridge Connectivity

On 12th January 2024 (Friday), PM Narendra Modi inaugurated a new bridge in Mumbai. This bridge connects South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai. It is known as Atal Setu Bridge. It will help people with reducing their travel time from around two hours to 20 minutes. It is also known as India's longest sea bridge.

Where is Atal Setu situated?

The Atal Setu is situated at Sewri in South Mumbai and connects Chirle near Nhava Sheva in Navi Mumbai. It has many interchanges located at different locations, such as Sewri, Shivaji Nagar, Chirle, SH-54 and NH-348.

Atal Setu Bridge Inauguration Date

Atal Setu Bridge was inaugurated on 12th January 2024 by India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

Atal Setu Bridge History

It is found in history that PM Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of this bridge back in December 2016. It was to be completed in four and a half years. But it took more time to complete due to a delay in its development work. And now it has been completed after seven years.

Atal Setu Bridge Details

Earlier, it was known as Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL), but now it has been named as 'Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu' or simply Atal Setu.

Atal Setu Bridge Length

Atal Setu Bridge is considered to be the longest sea bridge in India. It is about 21.8 km in length, out of which 16.5 km is on the sea whereas the other 5.5 km is on land. It is a six-lane bridge providing easy travel for people.

Yes, Atal Setu is the longest bridge in India till now. It is not only the longest bridge in India, but it is also the longest sea bridge in India till date, having a total length of about 21.8 km. It connects South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra (India).

Mumbai Bridge Cost

This bridge was constructed at a cost of Rs 17,840 crores. In it, more than 1,77,903 metric tons of steel and 5,4253 metric tons of cement have been used. It is expected that the bridge will last for around 100 years.

This bridge provides an automated toll collection system.

Car tolls on Atal Setu

To cross the bridge via car, you have to pay a toll of Rs 250. However, daily or monthly passes will be accessible for regular travellers. The daily pass for a car will be Rs 625 and the monthly pass will be Rs 12,500.

Vehicles allowed on Atal Setu

To maintain its longevity, only specific vehicles are allowed to use it. These vehicles include cars, taxis, lightweight vehicles, small buses, small trucks etc.

Vehicles not allowed on Atal Setu Bridge

The vehicles which are not allowed to be on the Atal Setu are two-wheelers, three wheelers, auto rickshaws, tractors, low speed vehicles and bullock carts etc.

Speed limit on Atal Setu

It differs for different points of the bridge, such as while on it or while at entry or exit points. While going through it, the speed limit on the bridge can be 100 kmph and while at entry or exit points, it should be 40 kmph.
