What is a Smart City in India?
A smart city is a well established city, fulfilling needs in an easy way.
The Indian government has launched a program under the Ministry of Urban Development department to make Indian cities more livable, providing quality standards of living for modern day life for its citizens. This mission comes under the smart city project.
Smart City Features:
- Provide a clean environment
- Good infrastructure
- Sufficient electricity and water supply
- Affordable housing
- Good education and health
- Proper waste management
- Parking facilities
The Central government has proposed Rs. 48,000 crores over five years for this project, which means on average Rs. 100 crore per city per year will be provided. An equal amount is invested by the state government for it.
Smart City Projects in India
1) Andaman & Nicobar Islands is going to have one smart city named Port Blair.
2) Andhra Pradesh will soon have four smart cities. These cities are named Amaravati, Kakinada, Tirupati, Visakhapatnam.
3) Arunachal Pradesh will have one smart city, named Pasighat.
4) Assam will also have one such city, named Guwahati.
5) Bihar has approved its four cities to be developed under this mission. These are named Bhagalpur, Biharsharif, Muzaffarpur, Patna.
6) Chandigarh, the capital of both Punjab and Haryana, is also included in this list.
7) Chhattisgarh has three cities under this project. These are named Bilaspur, Naya Raipur, Raipur.
8) Daman & Diu's Diu is also on the list.
9) Dadra & Nagar Haveli is going to have Silvassa as its smart city.
10) Delhi, the capital of the country, New Delhi, is also listed.
11) Goa has Panaji on this list.
12) Gujarat has 6 cities: Ahmedabad, Dahod, Gandhinagar, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara.
13) Haryana has 2 cities: Faridabad and Karnal.
14) Himachal Pradesh is going to have Dharamshala as its smart city.
15) Jammu & Kashmir will have Srinagar on this list.
16) Jharkhand has Ranchi under this project.
17) Karnataka has seven important cities under this scheme, named: Belagavi, Bengaluru, Davanagere, Hubbali-Dharwad, Mangaluru, Shimoga, Tumakuru.
18) Kerala will have two cities, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.
19) Lakshadweep will have Kavaratti.
20) Madhya Pradesh has listed its seven cities: Bhopal, Gwalior, Indore, Jabalpur, Sagar, Satna, Ujjain.
21) Maharashtra has shortlisted its ten cities: Amravati, Aurangabad, Kalyan Dombivali, Mumbai, Nagpur, Navi Mumbai, Nashik, Pune, Solapur, Thane.
22) Manipur has Imphal, Meghalaya has Shillong, Mizoram has Aizawl, Nagaland has Kohima shortlisted as their smart cities.
23) Odisha is going to have two smart cities under the scheme. These are named Bhubaneshwar and Rourkela.
24) Puducherry is named Oulgaret.
25) Punjab is going to have three smart cities soon, named Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana.
26) Rajasthan will have four cities, such as Ajmer, Jaipur, Kota and Udaipur.
27) Sikkim has named two Gangtok and Namchi cities.
28) Tamil Nadu has shortlisted its twelve cities for turning them into smart cities. These are Chennai, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Erode, Madurai, Salem, Thanjavur, Thoothukudi, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Tiruppur, Vellore.
29) Telangana will have two cities known as Karimnagar and Warangal.
30) Tripura has listed Agartala.
31) Uttar Pradesh has named ten cities under this scheme. These are named as Agra, Aligarh, Bareilly, Jhansi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Moradabad, Prayagraj, Saharanpur, Varanasi.
32) Uttarakhand has listed Dehradun.
33) West Bengal has listed four names for this scheme. These are Salt Lake, New Town, Haldia and Durgapur.
Upcoming Smart City Projects in India
There are 7,959 total projects for which money required is ₹ 1,71,232 Cr.
As per November 15, 2023, the projects completed are 6,235 (78%) with an investment of ₹ 1,14,864 Cr. and upcoming(ongoing) projects are 1,724 (22%) requiring an investment of ₹ 56,368 Cr.
